In a recent development, Spartak Moscow forward Quincy Promes has been apprehended in Dubai upon the request of Dutch authorities. The Netherlands seeks the extradition of the 32-year-old former Dutch international, who was sentenced in absentia to six years in prison last month for drug trafficking.
Dutch prosecutors announced late on Wednesday their intention to pursue the extradition of Promes, who had failed to attend court hearings in his case in Amsterdam and was not expected to return to the Netherlands in the foreseeable future.
Promes’ arrest in Dubai was facilitated through a “Red Notice,” which serves as a global request to law enforcement agencies to locate and provisionally detain an individual pending extradition.
The charges against Promes stem from his alleged involvement in the trafficking of 1,360kg of cocaine from Brazil, transported through the port of Antwerp, Belgium, to the Netherlands in two shipments during 2020. The Amsterdam court concluded that Promes played a direct role in the illicit activities.
This isn’t the only legal issue Promes faces in his home country. In a separate case, the former Ajax Amsterdam and Sevilla forward was sentenced in absentia last year to 18 months in jail for assault. This charge relates to a 2020 altercation in which Promes allegedly stabbed a cousin in the knee.
Despite the gravity of the charges, Promes vehemently denies any wrongdoing and has initiated appeals in both cases. However, his arrest in Dubai marks a significant development in the legal proceedings against him, signaling the potential extradition to the Netherlands to face trial for his alleged involvement in drug trafficking.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the case of Quincy Promes serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of alleged criminal activities, even for individuals in the public eye and professional sports.
