Shohei Ohtani, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ designated hitter, will not participate in their spring training opener against the San Diego Padres on Thursday as he continues to recover from elbow surgery. Despite progress in his rehabilitation, Ohtani did not engage in live batting practice on Sunday.
Manager Dave Roberts confirmed Ohtani’s absence from the spring training opener, noting the player’s diligence in rehabilitation, which has placed him ahead of initial expectations. While Ohtani’s precise return to Cactus League games remains uncertain, Roberts expressed optimism about his ongoing improvement.
Ohtani, who joined the Dodgers in December on a record-breaking 10-year, $700 million deal, underwent elbow surgery to repair a torn UCL in September. Although he is not expected to pitch until the 2025 season, he aims to play as the designated hitter in the Dodgers’ season opener against the Padres on March 20 in South Korea.
Despite his injury, Ohtani has been training rigorously and recently showcased his batting prowess by reportedly hitting 10 home runs on just 21 swings during batting practice. The 29-year-old slugger, known for his impressive offensive skills, recorded 44 home runs and 95 RBIs last season, nearing his career highs.
If Ohtani is unable to participate in the Dodgers’ games in South Korea, the team will resume its schedule in the United States on March 28.
