BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Northwestern secured a hard-fought victory against Indiana on Sunday, prevailing 76-72 in a game marked by standout performances from Ryan Langborg, Matthew Nicholson, and Nick Martinelli.
Langborg showcased his scoring prowess, achieving a season-high 26 points, while Nicholson and Martinelli both recorded double-doubles. Northwestern (18-8, 9-6 Big Ten) managed to break a five-game road losing streak in conference play, despite facing a challenging 35.4 percent shooting effort.
Nicholson contributed 14 points and an impressive 16 rebounds, complemented by Martinelli’s 13 points and 13 boards. Boo Buie, Northwestern’s leading scorer, added 14 points, although he didn’t register a field goal until 8:35 remained in the game.
Kel’el Ware’s double-double of 22 points and 16 rebounds led the Hoosiers (14-11, 6-8), with Mackenzie Mgbako scoring 20 points and Trey Galloway contributing 12 assists. Despite shooting at an efficient 50.9 percent, Indiana couldn’t overcome Northwestern’s resilience.
Although the Hoosiers trailed by 16 with 6:17 remaining, they managed to cut the lead to five with an 11-0 run. However, Northwestern maintained control, securing the win and preventing Indiana from getting closer than three points in the closing moments.
The Wildcats demonstrated efficiency at the free-throw line, going 22-for-28 compared to Indiana’s 12-for-21. Northwestern successfully navigated the Hoosiers’ challenges, securing their first conference road victory since January 10 at Penn State.
Key moments included Langborg’s three-pointer following a spectacular block by Ware, extending Northwestern’s lead to five. Despite Indiana’s attempts to close the gap, Northwestern consistently found answers, ultimately clinching the victory.
The game’s dynamics shifted when Indiana closed within one point at 43-42 with 12:52 left, but Martinelli’s timely 3-pointer sparked a 12-3 run for the Wildcats, re-establishing a double-digit lead.
Langborg and Martinelli played pivotal roles in Northwestern’s success, contributing significantly to a 34-26 halftime lead. Despite Boo Buie’s limited first-half minutes due to foul trouble, the team effectively navigated challenges, with Buie contributing four points from the free-throw line.
