Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka demonstrated her focus and skill at the Australian Open, blocking out political overtones to secure a resounding 6-0, 6-0 victory against Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko in the third round.
The match, which was a one-sided affair lasting 52 minutes on Rod Laver Arena, unfolded in a subdued atmosphere. Reigning champion Sabalenka, playing without official national affiliation due to conditions imposed on Russian and Belarusian players, showcased her prowess, delivering a comprehensive “double bagel” to the 28th seed Tsurenko.
The absence of a traditional handshake over the net at the match’s conclusion reflected the ongoing political complexities. Sabalenka acknowledged the situation, emphasizing, “This situation has been happening for a long time on tour, and I understand and respect everyone’s position.” Despite the lack of a handshake, Sabalenka appreciated Tsurenko’s respectful acknowledgment of her play.
Tsurenko, who withdrew from a match against Sabalenka last year due to a panic attack related to discussions about the tennis community’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, reiterated her stance of not shaking hands with Russian and Belarusian players. She aims to draw attention to the ongoing challenges faced by the people of Ukraine as the second anniversary of the invasion approaches.
Sabalenka, the second seed and last year’s champion, has continued her impressive form at Melbourne Park, conceding only six games in three matches so far. She expressed her goal to match the ruthlessness of world number one Iga Swiatek, stating, “I’m super happy with the level I’m playing so far, and I’m just hoping I can keep going like that, or even better.”
In the upcoming fourth round, Sabalenka will face Amanda Anisimova, who defeated former world number two Paula Badosa 7-5, 6-4. Despite Anisimova’s lower ranking, Sabalenka anticipates a tough match, acknowledging Anisimova as a “super player” and expressing excitement about her return to competitive tennis.
