A Wolverhampton Wanderers fan turned impromptu fourth official experienced a mix of surreal emotions as his team secured a late winner in Tuesday’s FA Cup tie against Brentford. Ross Bennett, a youth-level referee, stepped forward to assist when an assistant referee fell ill during extra time.
Bennett volunteered to take on fourth official duties after receiving a quick crash course from the match referee. The fan-turned-official found himself officiating an FA Cup replay match for the next 30 minutes, describing the experience as “surreal” and “crazy.”
His unique position allowed him to witness Wolves score a late penalty in extra time, securing a 3-2 victory and advancing to the fourth round with a clash against West Bromwich Albion. Bennett, who was internally “screaming” with joy, shared the unique challenge of not being able to openly celebrate the third goal as he was uncertain about maintaining neutrality.
Despite the dilemma, Bennett’s unexpected foray into officiating added an extraordinary chapter to his fan experience, blending his passion for Wolves with a brief role as a match official.
