Milan Momcilovic played a pivotal role in Iowa State’s triumph, hitting a late tiebreaking jumper and sealing the deal with crucial free throws. The game witnessed a resilient effort from the Cougars (14-1, 1-1 Big 12), who, despite a sluggish start, managed to tie the game at 41-41 with 10:48 remaining. However, a series of decisive plays by Iowa State shifted the momentum in their favor.
Jamal Shead’s jumper briefly gave Houston its first lead, but Iowa State responded swiftly. Robert Jones’ layup and Hason Ward’s free throw propelled the Cyclones back into the lead. Shead’s 10-footer tied the game at 53-53 with under a minute left, setting the stage for Momcilovic’s heroics. The Iowa State player sunk a turnaround jumper over two Houston defenders, securing a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Momcilovic’s subsequent free throws with 10.7 seconds remaining ensured Iowa State’s triumph over the previously unbeaten Cougars.
