The Argentine Rugby Union (UAR) announced on Monday that former Argentina flyhalf Felipe Contepomi will take over as the new head coach, succeeding Australian Michael Cheika. Contepomi, who earned 87 caps as a player for Argentina, previously served as an assistant to Cheika.
Cheika, who spent less than two years in the role, led the team to the semi-finals of the World Cup in October and a fourth-placed finish. In a statement, Cheika expressed gratitude to the Argentinian rugby community for the opportunity, stating, “I am very proud to have been the head coach of Los Pumas, and it is one of the experiences I have enjoyed the most in my coaching career.”
During his tenure, Cheika oversaw 24 test matches, recording 11 wins and 13 defeats. The team’s notable achievement under his leadership was reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup in France, where they suffered a heavy defeat to New Zealand and narrowly lost to England in the bronze final.
Felipe Contepomi, who had served as Cheika’s assistant, expressed gratitude for the opportunity and the trust placed in him by the UAR. He acknowledged the honor of working with Cheika in consolidating a sporting project and emphasized his commitment to the team’s goals, particularly looking ahead to the 2027 World Cup in Australia.
“I had the honor of working with Michael Cheika in the consolidation of a sporting project, which challenges and excites us as part of a great Argentine team,” Contepomi stated. “For that reason, I am grateful for the extraordinary opportunity that the UAR gives me to continue working towards the cherished goal of the 2027 World Cup in Australia.”
The transition in coaching leadership comes as Argentina looks to build on its recent successes and further establish itself as a competitive force in international rugby. Contepomi’s experience, both as a player and in his coaching role, positions him well to guide the team in the next phase of its journey.
