In the draw for the 2024 Copa America, defending champions Argentina and perennial contenders Brazil found themselves in favorable groups, while hosts the United States are set to face the challenge of 15-time winners Uruguay.
The tournament kicks off on June 20 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, where world champions Argentina will commence their campaign in a Group A match against either Canada or Trinidad and Tobago. These two teams will meet in a CONCACAF playoff in March to determine the final entrant. Argentina’s group also includes Peru and Chile, setting the stage for a rematch of the 2016 centenary edition final, where Lionel Messi’s squad suffered a penalty shootout defeat.
In Group D, nine-time champions Brazil, who were runners-up in the previous tournament, have been drawn alongside Colombia, Paraguay, and another CONCACAF qualifier, either Honduras or Costa Rica.
The host nation, the United States, will open their Group C campaign against Bolivia and Panama. Their final group stage challenge will be against Uruguay, a football powerhouse with 15 Copa America titles, tying them with Argentina. The Americans, aiming to improve on their best result in the tournament following a top-four finish in 2016, face a tough test against Uruguay.
In Group B, CONCACAF Gold Cup winners Mexico will compete against Jamaica, Venezuela, and Ecuador.
The top two teams from each of the four groups will progress to the quarter-finals, with the final set to take place at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on July 14. The draw, conducted at the James L. Knight Center in Miami, has set the stage for an exciting Copa America in 2024.
