Eindhoven, Netherlands – In a riveting group stage clash on Wednesday, PSV Eindhoven scripted a remarkable comeback, overturning a two-goal deficit to secure a 3-2 victory against Sevilla. The win not only cemented their place in the Champions League last 16 but also dashed Sevilla’s qualification hopes.
Sevilla took an early lead in the 24th minute, courtesy of a goal by defender Sergio Ramos. The Spanish side extended their advantage just two minutes into the second half when Youssef En Nesyri chipped the ball over the goalkeeper.
However, the momentum of the match shifted dramatically when Sevilla’s Lucas Ocampos received two yellow cards in the space of three minutes, resulting in his expulsion in the 66th minute.
PSV seized the opportunity to mount a comeback, with Ismael Saibari narrowing the gap with a superb volley in the 68th minute. The Dutch side then equalized in the 81st minute through an own goal by Sevilla’s Nemanja Gudelj.
The turnaround was completed with a decisive header from Ricardo Pepi, securing a comeback victory for PSV and propelling them to second place in Group B with eight points.
This victory secured PSV Eindhoven’s spot in the knockout stage, as group leaders Arsenal further solidified their standing by thrashing third-placed Lens 6-0 later that day. With five points and an inferior head-to-head record, Lens is now unable to catch up with PSV.
Sevilla, rooted at the bottom of the group with two points, now shifts their focus to securing a Europa League berth by finishing third. The seven-time Europa League winners, facing a challenging run of form with just one win in their last 12 matches across all competitions, are set to clash with Lens in their final group match, aiming to surpass them in the standings.
Reflecting on the game, Sevilla’s Sergio Ramos admitted, “We had a favorable result after dominating the first half, but going a man down killed us and they took advantage of it,” speaking to Movistar Plus. The loss adds another layer of challenge for Sevilla as they navigate their way through the remainder of the group stage.
