Setback for Major League Pickleball as Pay Cut Proposal Rattles Players

Wednesday’s report by CNBC revealed a significant hurdle in the otherwise surging growth of Pickleball, as Major League Pickleball (MLP) urged its players to accept a substantial 40% reduction in pay. The request, outlined in an email to players, also proposed slashing annual workdays from 200 to 120, with salaries adjusted accordingly.

According to CNBC’s coverage, players who consent to these terms would be assured a minimum of 10 slots at Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) events.

The email sent to players stated, “We have carefully studied the economics of the business and determined that certain changes need to be made to ensure a sustainable and viable business that will not only survive but thrive in 2024 and beyond for the benefit of all stakeholders.”

MLP asserted that these changes were essential to secure the long-term viability of the business. As part of the restructuring plan, the league also disclosed intentions to cut operational and event-related costs for the year 2024. Additionally, it was revealed that MLP had parted ways with Commissioner Brooks Wiley.

In September, MLP and the PPA Tour, rival leagues in the Pickleball arena, announced plans to merge. However, as of now, neither MLP nor the PPA Tour have responded to Reuters’ request for comment on the recent developments.

Pickleball, a rapidly growing paddle sport with similarities to tennis and badminton, has experienced a surge in popularity. Invented in 1965, the sport has recently gained momentum, earning the title of the fastest-growing sport in the United States. Despite this setback, the future trajectory of Pickleball’s growth remains of considerable interest, especially as leagues navigate challenges to ensure the sustainability of the sport’s professional landscape.
