In the wake of Everton’s unprecedented 10-point deduction by the Premier League for breaching financial sustainability rules, striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has asserted that the team remains resolute and focused on delivering strong performances.
Last week, an independent commission handed down the immediate deduction, plunging Everton from 14th to second-from-bottom in the league standings. Despite this setback, the club’s director of football, Kevin Thelwell, announced on Wednesday that Everton would use the deduction as “additional fuel” for the remainder of the campaign.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s match against Manchester United, Calvert-Lewin expressed confidence in the team’s ability to rise above the adversity. “I expect the weekend to be no different – if not, more electric,” said the striker, underlining the players’ commitment to maintaining high standards on the field.
Calvert-Lewin acknowledged the support of the fans and emphasized that the players would prepare for the upcoming match with the same dedication as always. “I’m sure the fans will be ready. Us as players, we’ll prepare the same as normal and make sure we’re ready to put in a performance and collect the three points,” he stated.
Addressing the impact of the point deduction on team morale, the 26-year-old striker noted a sense of unity and togetherness among the players. “We were off on the international break when the news broke, but coming back in this week, I don’t feel like it’s fazed us players,” he added.
Calvert-Lewin highlighted the players’ collective focus on the immediate task at hand, emphasizing that they cannot change the circumstances surrounding the deduction. “We know, as a group, we can’t affect that. All we can affect is what’s in front of us, and that’s the game on Sunday, so we’re looking forward to that,” he explained.
Despite narrowly avoiding relegation in the last two seasons, Everton has shown resilience in recent performances, securing four wins and a draw from their last seven league games. As they gear up to face Manchester United, the Everton players seem determined to rise above the challenges and continue their positive run in the Premier League.
