Bob Myers Addresses Draymond Green’s Suspension: A Lesson in Accountability

As the Golden State Warriors grapple with a five-game losing streak and the absence of star point guard Steph Curry due to a knee injury, former Warriors general manager and current TV analyst Bob Myers shared his perspective on the recent suspension of Draymond Green. Green, ejected and subsequently suspended for five games after an altercation with Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert, faces a pivotal moment in his career.

Speaking on “The TK Show” podcast with The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami, Myers expressed what he would convey to Green after his fifth career suspension. Acknowledging Green’s competitive nature, Myers emphasized accountability.

“The Draymond stuff is the Draymond stuff,” Myers remarked. “If that’s me, I’m saying, ‘Hey, that’s it.’ Right? You’ve made your mistake … So now you can’t make any more, and I would assume he’d look me in the eye and say, ‘Yeah, OK.'”

Myers drew an analogy, suggesting that Green has used up his “mulligan” and must now focus on avoiding further mistakes to benefit the team. He expressed confidence that Green, known for his receptiveness to feedback, would understand the need to move forward without additional incidents.

“You kind of used up your mulligan early, so now we’ve got to get through the rest of the 18 holes. And I think he would agree. He would say, ‘You’re right.’ It’s not good for the team, it’s not good for him. I don’t think he’ll push back on that,” Myers stated.

Despite stepping down from his front-office role, Myers maintains contact with Green and highlighted the player’s willingness to listen and learn from feedback. Myers recalled past conversations with Green, acknowledging that while he listens and learns, mistakes are still made.

As Warriors coach Steve Kerr remarked on Green “taking it too far” during the altercation, the hope is that this suspension serves as a valuable learning lesson for the defensive leader, especially considering the Warriors’ need for his presence on the court in the remainder of the 2023-24 NBA season.
