In a blow to England’s upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia, Tottenham Hotspur’s midfielder James Maddison has withdrawn from the squad due to an ankle injury. The confirmation came from Maddison’s club, Tottenham Hotspur, on Friday.
The 26-year-old midfielder sustained the injury during Spurs’ recent 4-1 home defeat against rivals Chelsea. Maddison was substituted in the first-half stoppage time after going to the ground without any contact, ending Ange Postecoglou’s unbeaten start to the season.
Since his transfer from relegated Leicester City to north London in June, Maddison has contributed significantly with three goals and five assists in 11 Premier League appearances.
Maddison is the latest addition to Spurs’ growing injury list, which already includes players like Micky van de Ven, Richarlison, Ivan Perisic, Ben Davies, and Manor Solomon. The club confirmed the news on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, “We can confirm that James Maddison has been withdrawn from the England squad due to an ankle injury. (Maddison) will remain at Hotspur Way for rehabilitation with the Club’s medical staff.”
Tottenham Hotspur, currently in the second spot and trailing leaders Manchester City by one point after 11 matches, will face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
England, without Maddison, will play against Malta in Group C at Wembley next Friday and travel to North Macedonia three days later. Maddison’s absence poses a challenge for the national team as they aim to secure vital points in the Euro 2024 qualifiers.
