Paris St Germain (PSG) has granted permission for midfielder Lee Kang-in to join South Korea’s Asian Games squad during the group stage, as confirmed by the country’s football association (KFA) on Friday.
The KFA revealed that an agreement was reached with the Ligue 1 side on Thursday, allowing Lee Kang-in to be released following PSG’s upcoming Champions League opener against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.
It’s important to note that teams are not obligated to release players for the Asian Games, as the tournament falls outside FIFA’s official window.
Originally scheduled for 2022 but postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Asian Games will take place from September 23 to October 8 in Hangzhou, China. The men’s soccer tournament commences on September 19, with South Korea embarking on their quest for a third consecutive gold medal. Their group stage fixtures include matches against Kuwait on September 19, Thailand on September 21, and Bahrain three days later in Group E.
Lee Kang-in, aged 22, joined PSG from Real Mallorca in July and made appearances in their first two league games. However, a muscle injury sidelined him since August 22. He is expected to become available for South Korea’s third group-stage match, further enhancing their prospects in the competition.
