The president of the Spanish soccer federation, Luis Rubiales, issued an apology on Monday after facing backlash over an unsolicited kiss planted on player Jenni Hermoso’s lips during celebrations of Spain’s victory in the Women’s World Cup. The incident unfolded as Rubiales presented the Spanish team with gold medals after their triumphant 1-0 win against England in the final on Sunday.
In a video statement released by the federation, Rubiales acknowledged his misstep, stating, “Surely I was wrong, I have to admit. It was without bad faith at a time of maximum effusiveness.”
As the victorious team returned to Madrid on Monday night from their conquest in Australia, Rubiales remained tight-lipped when questioned about the incident, stating, “It is time to enjoy and celebrate. We have won a World Cup.”
Hermoso, who later conveyed her discomfort with the incident in a locker room conversation captured on video, provided a different perspective in a statement to the Spanish news agency EFE. She characterized the gesture as a spontaneous and mutual display of affection and gratitude, emphasizing her positive rapport with Rubiales.
Post-game footage also documented Rubiales bestowing similar displays of affection on other players, including cheek kisses and embraces during the medal distribution.
Amidst the fervor of victory, Rubiales enthusiastically celebrated in the presence of Spain’s Queen Letizia and her daughter, drawing attention by gesturing towards the field while touching his crotch.
