Alijah Arenas, a highly regarded basketball prospect and son of former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas, is in an induced coma after being involved in a serious car crash in Los Angeles early Thursday morning. The 18-year-old was reportedly traveling in a Tesla Cybertruck when the vehicle veered off the road. The Los Angeles Fire Department has not officially confirmed the identity of the driver, but the individual was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.
The incident has shaken the basketball community, with USC head coach Eric Musselman expressing support for Arenas and his family. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Alijah and his family following this morning’s accident,” Musselman said. “Please keep him, his teammates and friends, and the entire Arenas family in your prayers.”
Alijah Arenas, who has committed to play for USC, is considered one of the top prospects in the class of 2025. The 6ft 6in guard’s talent was on display during the McDonald’s All-American Game in April, where his father, Gilbert Arenas, was present to watch him.
The Arenas family, including Alijah’s sister Izela, who recently transferred to Kansas State, is receiving an outpouring of support during this difficult time. Gilbert Arenas, a former NBA star who played from 2001 to 2012, is a three-time All-Star and won the league’s Most Improved Player award in 2003.
The Arenas family and basketball community remain hopeful for Alijah’s recovery as details surrounding the accident continue to unfold.
