Heisman Winner Travis Hunter Expected to Make History in the NFL Draft

Travis Hunter, the Heisman Trophy winner and one of the most highly regarded players in the upcoming NFL Draft, is expected to be selected in the top five. Many analysts predict Hunter will go second overall, just behind University of Miami quarterback Cam Ward, a highly valued position in the pass-heavy NFL.

Hunter is aiming to make history by becoming the first player to play both offense and defense regularly in the modern NFL. He expressed his excitement about the opportunity, saying, “They told me they was going to let me go out there and do what I do.” Hunter spoke with both coordinators from the Jacksonville Jaguars, who selected him, and plans to contribute in multiple areas of the game.

Jaguars’ general manager James Gladstone reflected on the moment, calling it “an awfully enjoyable time” and one he would remember. Hunter, wearing a neon pink blazer and flashing a big smile, was selected by the Jaguars after an outstanding college career. In his final season at Colorado, he caught 96 passes for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns. On defense, he made 35 tackles, broke up 11 passes, and intercepted four.

Hunter will join quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Pro Bowl receiver Brian Thomas Jr. as part of the Jaguars’ offensive core. While he is expected to be primarily a receiver, Jacksonville plans to use him in defensive packages as well. Hunter has stated that he wants to play both offense and defense at the pro level, similar to NFL legend Deion “Prime Time” Sanders, whom he admires.

“There’s no pressure,” Hunter said. “I just got to go out there and do my job, be Travis Hunter.” He emphasized that he is ready to help the Jaguars win and elevate the organization.

Gladstone expressed his belief that Hunter could be a game-changer, saying, “There are very few players who can alter the trajectory of a game, and Travis is someone we view as potentially altering the sport itself.”

During his two seasons at Colorado, Hunter averaged an FBS-high 111.5 snaps per game. For context, Denver’s Patrick Surtain II, the NFL’s defensive player of the year, played 978 snaps over 17 games — all on defense.

While Shedeur Sanders, another standout at Colorado, was once expected to be the first overall pick, analysts now predict he will go after Ward. Still, Sanders is expected to make an immediate impact wherever he is drafted.

Colorado has not had a quarterback drafted since Koy Detmer in 1997, but the school has seen notable first-round picks, including Nate Solder (2011) and Jimmy Smith (2011). Hunter aims to add his name to the list of Colorado players making history in the NFL.
