Former Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III is poised to join Fox Sports as its No. 2 college football game analyst, according to sources briefed on the move. Griffin, 35, is expected to replace Brock Huard, who announced he would leave the booth to become an assistant coach for his son’s high school football team.
Griffin will work alongside play-by-play announcer Jason Benetti. Fox Sports declined to comment on the hiring.
While the deal is expected to be finalized, a contract has not yet been signed. Griffin’s exit from ESPN in August 2023 came just before the start of the football season. Although ESPN continued to pay Griffin after his departure, the network had the right to block him from pursuing other opportunities.
Griffin’s broadcasting career has been a mix of highs and lows since his NFL career ended. After impressing networks in 2021 with his game analyst auditions, Griffin chose to join ESPN, where he worked on the “Monday Night Football” pregame show and became one of the network’s top college football analysts.
Despite his role at ESPN, Fox Sports remained interested in Griffin. In 2022, when there was a contract dispute with top analyst Reggie Bush, Fox considered hiring Griffin to replace him. Instead, the network opted for Mark Ingram II after Bush stayed for another season.
Griffin’s departure from ESPN came last year, but he made an appearance on Netflix’s NFL studio show on Christmas Day.
With Fox Sports, Griffin will primarily focus on game broadcasts. While he may appear occasionally on studio shows, he is not expected to have a significant presence in talk shows, as he did with ESPN’s “Get Up” and “First Take.”
