Washington State Sweeps Portland in WCC Tennis Championship Opener

Portland women’s tennis saw its season come to an end on Thursday with a 4-0 loss to No. 54 Washington State in the opening round of the 2025 West Coast Conference Tennis Championships at the Aztec Tennis Center.

The Pilots finished the year with a 9-10 overall record. The Cougars move on to face San Diego in the next round of the tournament.

Portland seniors Sally Pethybridge and Aleksandra Dimitrijevic played their final collegiate matches. Both showed strong efforts, but the Pilots couldn’t break through against the higher-ranked Washington State team.

In doubles play, Washington State came back to win at both the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, 7-5. The top doubles match between Pethybridge and Alaia Rubio Perez for Portland, and Maxine Murphy and Eva Alvarez Sande for WSU, was tied at 6-6 in a tiebreak when the match was halted.

In singles, the Cougars grabbed early control by winning the first set on all six courts. Portland players fought back, but WSU secured the win with straight-set victories at the No. 6, No. 2, and No. 4 positions.

At No. 1 singles, Pethybridge led Murphy 4-2 in the third set when the match was stopped. Dimitrijevic and Nadine Arbaizar Martinez were also still competing in close matches when play ended.

Portland is expected to return most of its roster next season. Pethybridge and Dimitrijevic are the team’s only graduating seniors.
