The Morgan State men’s tennis team delivered a strong performance Thursday, beating No. 5 seed Howard 4-1 at the Cary Tennis Center. The win sends the Bears into the semifinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament.
Morgan now holds an 8-15 overall record, while Howard drops to 6-14.
The Bears got off to a fast start by winning the doubles point. On court No. 2, Majdi Ben Abdelwahed and Yessine Kerouat fought hard for a 6-4 win over Kaosie Nwokedi and Daniel Dunac. Meanwhile, Niles Rachal and Mohammed Ridh Ghettas matched that effort, defeating Kendrick Lash and Hassimiyou Dieng by the same score.
In singles play, MEAC Player of the Year Sebastian Carpenter proved why he earned the honor. He overcame a tough first set against Michael Major Jr., an All-MEAC player from Howard, winning 7-5. Carpenter then settled in and took the second set 6-2 to win the match on court No. 1.
Morgan State stayed in control during the singles matches. Niles Rachal dominated Kendrick Lash with a 6-0, 6-3 win. Yessine Kerouat followed with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Hassimiyou Dieng.
These key singles wins sealed the overall match for Morgan State, who now prepares to face top-seeded South Carolina State in Friday’s semifinal. The match is scheduled for 12 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
