Howard University’s tennis teams are set to compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament, aiming to bring a pair of titles back to the nation’s capital.
The Bison men enter the tournament as the No. 5 seed, while the women come in as the No. 3 seed. Both squads will face Morgan State University (MSU) in their opening round matchups.
Howard Women vs. Morgan State
The No. 3-seeded Howard women will square off against No. 6 Morgan State, a team they recently defeated 5-2 on April 16. Senior Jordan Grayson, from Gaithersburg, Maryland, played a key role in that victory, winning both her singles and doubles matches. She’ll look to deliver a repeat performance as the Lady Bison aim for a strong tournament run.
Morgan State Women’s Outlook
The Lady Bears enter the postseason with a 5-17 record and are hoping to reverse their fortunes in the tournament. They’ll face a confident Howard team that has momentum on its side.
Howard Men vs. Morgan State
On the men’s side, Howard will take on fourth-seeded Morgan State. In their regular season meeting last week, Howard earned a doubles win thanks to senior Marcel Dawson (Columbus, Ga.) and sophomore Michael Major Jr. (Nassau, Bahamas), but ultimately lost the match 5-2.
Morgan State Men’s Season
The Bears finished the regular season 7-14 and earned the No. 4 seed. Before a loss to Hofstra on April 19, they had won four straight matches, including their victory over Howard.
Last Time on the Court
The Howard women’s team dominated Coppin State in a 7-0 sweep. Sophomores Dana Hall (Miami) and Lauren Oliver (Winston-Salem, N.C.) led the way with a flawless 6-0 doubles win.
The Bison men also shut out Coppin State during their senior day celebration. Freshman Kaosie Nwokedi (Charlotte, N.C.) and senior Daniel Dunac (Washington, D.C.) notched a convincing 6-1 doubles win to cap off the performance.
What’s Next
If the Howard men win their opening match, they’ll face No. 1 seed South Carolina State on Friday, April 25, at noon.
A win for the women would set up a second-round clash against the winner of No. 2 North Carolina Central vs. No. 7 Coppin State. That match is scheduled for 9 a.m.
