Federico Cina Shines in Madrid with First-Round Victory Over Coleman Wong

Italian teenager Federico Cina made a strong first impression at the Mutua Madrid Open on Wednesday, defeating Coleman Wong 7-6(5), 6-1 to reach the second round.

The 18-year-old wild card followed up his successful ATP Masters 1000 debut in Miami last month with another standout performance. This was his first meeting against Wong on the ATP Tour.

“I am very happy about this win,” Cina said. “Before the match I was a little bit tight, but after a few games I started to feel good. It is really special to win a match at this event.”

Cina showed composure throughout the 81-minute match. According to Infosys ATP Stats, he saved both break points he faced and finished with a narrow 19-17 winners-to-unforced-errors ratio. The rising Italian will next face American Sebastian Korda.

Cina is coached by his father, Francesco Cina, a former professional player. A native of Palermo, Cina reached No. 4 in the junior rankings last year and is making waves on the pro circuit in 2025. He recently reached his first Challenger final in Hersonissos and scored his first ATP Tour win in Miami. He is currently ranked No. 373 and has moved up to ninth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Jeddah.

Other Highlights from Day 1 in Madrid

In other first-round action, Argentine Mariano Navone beat Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 6-4, 6-4. The World No. 85, known for his clay-court skills, previously reached finals in Rio de Janeiro and Bucharest. He will face Ben Shelton next.

Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech advanced to the second round in Madrid for the first time. He came from behind to defeat Roman Safiullin 7-6(4), 6-1 and will now meet Casper Ruud. Fellow Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi also moved on, defeating former Top 10 player Marin Cilic 6-3, 6-2. Christopher O’Connell took down Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-3, 6-4.

Spanish players had mixed results. Roberto Bautista Agut won an all-Spanish battle against Jaume Munar 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. However, Pablo Carreno Busta lost a tight match to Nuno Borges 6-7(7), 7-6(3), 6-3, and Francisco Comesana defeated Pedro Martinez 6-4, 6-4.

Elsewhere, Laslo Djere eased past Fabio Fognini 6-2, 6-3 to set up a clash with Daniil Medvedev. Sebastian Ofner beat Hugo Gaston 6-4, 6-3, while American Ethan Quinn advanced by defeating Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 6-4. Quinn will next face Miami Open champion Jakub Mensik.
