North Florida baseball was edged by South Carolina, 3-2, in an extra-inning battle at Founders Park on Tuesday night.
Redshirt senior Tommy Groom had a standout performance on the mound for the Ospreys, pitching three scoreless innings with no hits allowed and two strikeouts. Five other North Florida pitchers came in as relief, combining to allow just two runs in the final six innings before the game went into extras.
Connor Moore had a solid performance at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
South Carolina struck first with a two-run home run in the fifth inning to take a 2-0 lead.
In the sixth, Moore brought North Florida within one, hitting a single to left-center to score Mitchell Collins from second base. Collins had reached on an infield single and advanced on an errant throw. North Florida tied the game in the eighth when freshman Seth Alford lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, making it 2-2.
Junior right-hander Kaden Humphrey kept the Gamecocks off the scoreboard in the eighth and ninth innings, pushing the game into extra innings.
In the tenth inning, South Carolina capitalized with a double and a walk to open the frame, followed by another extra-base hit that drove in the deciding run for a 3-2 win.
