William & Mary pulled off one of its most thrilling wins of the season on Sunday, overcoming a five-run deficit and rallying in both the ninth and 10th innings to defeat Campbell 15-14 at Plumeri Park. Derek Holmes sealed the victory with a walk-off RBI single, helping the Tribe clinch the weekend series.
The Tribe (15-24, 9-6 CAA) entered the ninth trailing by three runs and were down two more in the 10th. But they responded both times with three-run frames. Holmes finished the day 3-for-7 with three RBI, while Lucas Carmichael and Owen Wilson each had four hits.
Early Fireworks from Campbell
Campbell (16-23, 7-8 CAA) jumped out early, scoring a run in the first inning before Seth Farni launched a grand slam in the second to build a 5-0 lead. William & Mary was hitless through two innings before erupting in the third.
The Tribe loaded the bases, and third baseman Jamie Laskofski put them on the board with a two-run single. Holmes followed with an RBI double. After a walk to Anthony Greco, Charlie Iriotakis tied the game at 5-5 with a two-run single. Seven straight W&M hitters reached safely in the inning.
Daniel Lingle came in for the Tribe in the second and settled things down, recording seven consecutive outs over 2⅔ innings with two strikeouts.
Chaos on the Basepaths
The Tribe briefly took the lead with a daring sequence. Laskofski escaped a rundown at second, which allowed Carmichael to steal third and score on the same play, putting W&M ahead 6-5.
But Campbell answered with a six-run fifth inning to reclaim the lead. Ryan Feczko came out of the bullpen for William & Mary and provided stability, throwing scoreless sixth and seventh innings.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Tribe fought back. Wilson smacked a two-run double, and Carmichael added a sacrifice fly to make it 11-8.
Center fielder Ben Parker added to the highlights with a single that extended his hitting streak to 25 games.
Rally Mode Activated
Down 12-9 in the ninth, W&M refused to quit. Laskofski ripped a double to left-center to make it 12-10. Holmes brought in another run with a single, and Greco’s sacrifice fly tied the game at 12-12.
Tyler Kelly pitched the ninth and part of the 10th for the Tribe, striking out two in 1⅔ innings.
Campbell scored two more in the top of the 10th to lead 14-12. But again, the Tribe answered. Wilson led off with a single, Carmichael was hit by a pitch, and Christian Rush brought in a run with a base hit. Carmichael then scored on a wild pitch to tie it. Holmes followed with a line drive down the left field line that scored the game-winner.
Noah Hertzler earned the win for W&M, while Bryce Schares took the loss for Campbell.
