Five local programs — Daleville, Delta, Monroe Central, Wapahani, and Yorktown — each reached the 15-win mark, highlighting the area’s depth of talent. While a state championship run remained elusive, strong postseason performances from Delta and Monroe Central captivated fans and marked a new era for girls basketball in East Central Indiana.

Delta’s Rise: A Season to Remember

No story stood out more than Delta’s unprecedented campaign. The Eagles posted their first winning season since 2011-12, claimed their first Delaware County Tournament title since 2019, and embarked on a historic postseason run.

Delta’s triumph in the sectional championship was its first since 1993, a feat made even sweeter by defeating arch-rival Yorktown. The Eagles followed that with their first-ever regional championship, before falling in the semi-state round to eventual 3A state champion Norwell.

With an 18-8 final record and no seniors on the roster, the Eagles’ journey appears to be just getting started.

Barr and Benning Earn Top Honors

After guiding Delta through its breakout season, junior forward Jillian Barr and second-year head coach Ty’Ronda Benning have been named The Star Press 2024-25 Girls Basketball Player and Coach of the Year, respectively.

Benning’s arrival in 2023 sparked an immediate shift in culture and performance. Taking over a program that hadn’t posted a winning season in over a decade, she led the team to a 12-12 record in her first year and followed that with this year’s historic achievements. She becomes the first Delta coach to earn Coach of the Year honors in over a decade.

Barr was the centerpiece of Delta’s success. The junior not only became the program’s all-time leading rebounder and sixth player to surpass 1,000 career points, but also delivered clutch performances throughout the postseason.

She scored 13 points against Hamilton Heights, followed by 26 against Jay County, and a career-high 31 in the sectional final versus Yorktown. In the regional championship, she posted a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double, shooting 7-for-10 from the field.

Barr averaged a double-double on the season with 16.2 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, while also contributing 4 steals, 2.4 blocks, and 1.7 assists per contest.

Monroe Central’s Resurgence

Another local success story came from Monroe Central, which claimed its first sectional title since 2019, dominating every game by at least 25 points. Led by seniors Maleigh Ervin, Sydney Patterson, and Addy Puckett, the Golden Bears turned the program around from a 3-15 campaign just four years ago.

All-Area Recognition

All 16 nominees from The Star Press Player of the Year poll were honored in the All-Area teams, divided into four teams of five. Selections were made by The Star Press sports staff to recognize the area’s top talent.

As Delta looks to build on its breakout season with a full roster returning, the Muncie area is poised for even more exciting basketball in 2025-26.
