Tar Heels Top Cavaliers 4-0 to Repeat as ACC Champions

With a commanding 4-0 win over Virginia, No. 2 seed North Carolina claimed its second straight ACC women’s tennis championship and the 13th in program history on Sunday at Cary Tennis Park.

The victory was about more than just a title. It was redemption.

Earlier this season, UNC lost to the Cavaliers twice—both times after winning the doubles point and struggling in singles. That led to a key change in team strategy. Now, win or lose, the Tar Heels huddle together before singles to reset, regroup, and stay focused.

Senior Carson Tanguilig led the pre-singles team talk, urging her teammates to act like they were behind—even though they had just secured the doubles point. Her message was simple: stay hungry, stay sharp.

“We used to only huddle if we lost doubles,” Tanguilig said. “But after those losses to Virginia, we realized we always need to stay mentally locked in.”

The team responded.

Tanguilig, who had been moved down the lineup after earlier struggles at the No. 3 spot, opened singles with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 win over Isabelle Lacy. It marked her sixth consecutive victory since settling into the No. 5 position.

“I surprised myself finishing first,” she said. “But I just wanted to keep things rolling and be aggressive.”

First-year Claire Hill followed with her own breakthrough. After losing to Virginia’s Melodie Collard in two earlier matches, including a painful deciding loss in January, Hill turned the tables with a confident 6-2, 6-0 win.

“She’s been tested, and she delivered today,” said junior Reese Brantmeier.

Brantmeier then delivered the clinching point. Her 6-2, 6-1 win sealed the title and sent the Tar Heels into celebration mode on the middle court of Cary Tennis Park.

This time, the post-match huddle came with hugs, cheers, and a trophy.

“It’s all about believing in the work we’ve put in,” said Tanguilig. “Everyone knows their role now. That’s what it takes to win titles like this.”
