Tulane Falls to UTSA 13-5 Despite Late Rally

The Tulane baseball team fought back from an early five-run deficit but ultimately fell short, losing to UTSA 13-5 on Thursday night, April 17, at Roadrunner Field. The Green Wave allowed 11 of the 13 runs in two big innings, which proved to be the difference in the contest.

Luc Fladda (2-4) took the mound for Tulane, starting strong but struggling early. He allowed seven runs on seven hits with five strikeouts over five innings. Six of those runs came in the first two innings, though Fladda bounced back to throw three scoreless frames.

Julius Ejike-Charles was the first reliever out of the bullpen but struggled to record an out, surrendering four runs on two hits and two walks. Henry Shuffler allowed two runs in a third of an inning, and J.D. Rodriguez threw two scoreless innings to close out the game.

Theo Bryant IV was the standout on offense, collecting three hits and driving in two runs. Hugh Pinkney added a home run and three RBIs on two hits, while Jason Wachs also picked up two base hits. Andrew McKenna, Connor Rasmussen, Tanner Chun, and James Agabedis III contributed the other four hits for the Green Wave.

UTSA (29-9, 11-2 AAC) was led by Zach Royse (5-4), who earned the win after allowing four runs over six innings.

Game Summary

The Roadrunners got on the board first in the opening inning with Garrett Gruell’s sacrifice fly. Tulane responded in the second with Pinkney’s second home run of the season, tying the game at 1-1.

UTSA regained the lead in the bottom of the second with Ty Hodge’s two-run home run and added three more runs on Norris McClure’s three-run shot, making it 6-1.

The Green Wave cut the deficit to three in the fourth inning as Bryant’s two-out, two-run single brought Tulane within 6-3. They made it a two-run game in the fifth on Pinkney’s fielder’s choice groundout, making it 6-4.

The turning point came in the bottom of the sixth, as UTSA exploded for six runs. The inning began with a wild pitch, followed by a bases-loaded triple from James Taussig, and concluded with a two-run double by Hodge, making the score 12-4.

Tulane responded with a run in the seventh, as Pinkney drove in his third RBI of the game, cutting the deficit to 12-5. However, UTSA tacked on another run in the seventh on Taussig’s sacrifice fly, making the final score 13-5.

Up Next

Tulane (23-16, 7-6 AAC) will look to bounce back in the second game of the series against UTSA on Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
