SFSU Women’s Volleyball Club Eyes National Title After Season of Growth and Grit

The San Francisco State University women’s volleyball club is heading to Phoenix with one clear goal: winning the National Collegiate Volleyball Federation (NCVF) National Championship. The tournament, taking place from April 17–19, marks a major milestone for a team that has faced early-season adversity but enters the national stage with renewed focus and confidence.

“I genuinely think 100%, without a doubt, we go all the way,” said Melea Jackson, club co-president. “As long as we play together and stay motivated, I don’t see anyone stopping us.”

That belief is hard-earned. The team started the season without a coach, struggling to find consistency and leadership during practices and games. Without one central voice, players found it difficult to stay organized.

“Early on, we had about five people trying to take charge,” said sophomore middle blocker Marissa Joseph. “It was hard to get on the same page.”

Things changed when Jayden Larios joined as head coach. At first, adjusting wasn’t easy. Being younger than many players on the team, Larios had to overcome hesitation from teammates-turned-players.

“It was tough at the beginning,” Larios said. “Since I was friends with a lot of the girls, it was hard to know when I was their friend and when I was their coach. But after the first few games, things started to click.”

With one voice leading the team, the Gators began to gel. Chemistry became their biggest strength, especially during setbacks. When sophomore setter Taryn Henry injured her elbow in preseason, her return was uncertain. But her teammates’ encouragement made all the difference.

“I was scared to dive again,” Henry said. “But they kept reminding me to ease into it. Their support helped me gain back my confidence.”

As Nationals approached, practices intensified under Larios’s direction. He pushed the team harder, preparing them for the pressure they’ll face in Phoenix.

“I’ve been tougher on the girls because I know how good they can be,” Larios said. “They may get frustrated with me sometimes, but I believe in them and I know their potential.”

Players have embraced the shift in mindset.

“Jay started making practices tougher and more intense,” Joseph said. “We realized this wasn’t just for fun anymore. It helped us learn to perform under pressure.”

The Gators now enter Nationals with momentum and determination. For Larios and the team, the journey has already proven their growth—but they’re not finished yet.

“I think this team can win it all,” Larios said. “If every player gives their full effort, I believe we can go undefeated.”
