The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) will host its first-ever spring football game on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Veterans Memorial High School in Brownsville. This event will mark the first opportunity for fans to see the Vaqueros football team in action.
Gates will open at 5 p.m. for the intrasquad game, where UTRGV players will be divided into two teams—orange and white. The game will feature four quarters and periodic timeouts. A full halftime show will include performances from the UTRGV marching band, cheerleaders, dancers, and drill teams.
“It’s going to be more of a fun atmosphere,” said UTRGV head coach Travis Bush. “We’re excited to see where UTRGV football stands and give fans a chance to watch our players.”
This spring game concludes a 15-practice spring period, during which the Vaqueros practiced three times per week. These sessions have been key in preparing not only for the spring game but also for the upcoming football season—the team’s first as an NCAA Division I program.
Following the spring game, UTRGV players will begin summer workouts in June, with training camp set to start in late July. In the meantime, coaches will focus on recruiting, visiting high schools throughout the state during the May contact period. The recently opened spring transfer portal will also give the team an opportunity to bring in more experienced players, helping to balance the roster.
For now, the Vaqueros are eager to play in front of what is expected to be a packed crowd on Thursday.
