Brisbane Roar has confirmed that Saturday’s clash with Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park will mark the final appearance for Mariel Hecher and Keeley Richards in the club’s colors.
Mariel Hecher, who joined the Roar ahead of the 2020/21 season, has been a key figure in the squad over the past five years. She has played 48 matches, scoring four goals and providing four assists. In her final season, Hecher appeared in 18 games, adding two goals and two assists to her tally.
Reflecting on her decision to retire, Hecher said stepping away from professional football was not easy.
“Football has been such a big part of my life—it shapes your routines and how you live each day to perform at your best,” she said. “But I’m ready for the next chapter. I’m looking forward to full-time work, more time with loved ones, and finally having weekends off.”
She added, “Being part of Brisbane Roar for five seasons has been incredibly special. I’ve made beautiful memories and met amazing people. It’s a chapter I’ll always hold close.”
Keeley Richards joined Brisbane Roar after starting her professional career with Canberra United in 2020. She made her debut for the Roar in Round 20 of the 2023/24 season, stepping into the starting role after Jordan Silkowitz was recalled to her parent club. Richards will make her 10th and final appearance this weekend.
“Playing professional football was always a dream, and I never imagined I’d get this far,” Richards said.
“I’m grateful to Canberra United for giving me my debut—it’s a moment I’ll never forget. And to spend my last two seasons playing at home in Brisbane, in front of family and friends, has been a true privilege.”
She thanked fans and the Brisbane community for their support, calling it “unrivalled.”
Brisbane Roar has extended its heartfelt thanks to both players for their contributions to the club and wished them all the best for the future.
