UAB women’s tennis (14–8, 1–2 AAC) kicks off postseason play this Thursday, April 17, against UTSA (18–4, 2–4 AAC) in the first round of the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Women’s Tennis Championship. First serve is scheduled for 9 a.m. CT at the Leftwich Tennis Center in Memphis, Tennessee.
The Blazers enter the tournament as the No. 9 seed, squaring off against the eighth-seeded Roadrunners in a pivotal opening-round matchup. The winner will earn a spot in the quarterfinals against top-seeded Florida Atlantic.
Momentum and Matchups
Despite a lower seeding, UAB carries momentum into the postseason thanks to strong individual performances throughout the spring. Leading the way is standout junior Kristyna Damaskova, who boasts a team-best 15–4 singles record. She’s closely followed by Mackenzie White at 12–6, while Vanessa Mellynchuk (12–7), Enya Ratkic (11–5), and Nera Tesankic (11–8) round out a consistent and competitive singles lineup.
While the Blazers posted a 1–2 record in AAC play, they’ve shown depth and resilience across the board, positioning them well for a strong postseason run.
UTSA, meanwhile, comes in with a solid 18–4 overall mark but stumbled slightly in conference play at 2–4, opening the door for a potential upset by the Blazers.
What’s at Stake
A win on Thursday would give UAB a shot at the tournament’s No. 1 seed, Florida Atlantic, in Friday’s quarterfinals—a major opportunity to prove themselves against the AAC’s best.
With depth, experience, and momentum, UAB has all the tools to make noise in Memphis this week.
