New Zealand internationals Meikayla Moore and Ally Green will make history by playing in the inaugural match of Canada’s first-ever professional women’s football league, the Northern Super League (NSL).
The six-team NSL will kick off as Canada’s first professional women’s league. Moore, 26, and Green, 26, will represent Calgary Wild in the season opener against Vancouver Rise on April 16, 2025.
Football Ferns striker Milly Clegg, 19, will also feature in the NSL. She has joined Halifax Tides on a season-long loan from Racing Louisville, who play in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in the United States.
Moore, with 69 caps for New Zealand, joined Calgary Wild from Scottish club Glasgow City. Green, who has 17 caps for her national team, previously played for A-League club Sydney before moving to Norway and then signing with Danish club AGF in 2023.
The Calgary Wild team is coached by Lydia Bedford, who made history as the first woman to hold a coaching role in an English Premier League club, when she led the U-18 men’s team at a top-flight English club.
“Someone’s got to be the first in every situation,” Bedford said. “For me, it’s not about being fazed by it—it’s a privilege.”
The NSL promises to be a significant milestone for Canadian football, as it establishes a professional platform for women’s soccer in the country.
