The William & Mary men’s tennis team wrapped up its regular season with a 4-1 win against Richmond on Tuesday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
The Tribe secured the doubles point early and added three singles victories to clinch the match. With the win, W&M improved to 6-13 on the season.
Doubles Set the Tone
The Tribe got off to a strong start in doubles. On court three, Oliver Hague and Albert Hansen defeated Richmond’s Mark Taranov and Grant Cohen, 6-2, earning their fourth doubles win as a team. At No. 2, freshman Gur Trakhtenberg and senior Sean Joseph delivered a commanding 6-1 win over Sam Rathmanner and Paxton Pritchard to clinch the doubles point. The duo improved to a 9-3 record together.
Singles Play Secures the Win
Richmond (9-8) evened the match with a win at No. 6 singles, but the Tribe quickly responded.
- No. 2: Hague gave W&M the lead again with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 win over Pritchard. The victory marked Hague’s 14th singles win of the season.
- No. 3: Nikita Bortnichek extended the Tribe’s lead to 3-1 with a 7-5, 6-2 win against Otto Sewell. It was his 11th singles win and sixth in dual match play.
- No. 1: Trakhtenberg sealed the team victory with a gritty comeback against Davis Wiley. After losing the first set 6-2, he bounced back with a 6-2 win in the second and closed out the match 6-4 in the third. He now holds a 17-12 overall record, including six wins at the top singles spot.
Other Matches
- On court four, Hansen won the first set 6-4 and trailed 3-5 in the second when the match was called.
- At No. 5, Joseph forced a third set after dropping the first. He won the second set 7-5, but the match was abandoned before the third set started.
What’s Next
William & Mary now awaits its status for the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship. Only six teams qualify for the tournament, which takes place April 25–27 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, North Carolina. The league is expected to announce the final tournament field early next week.
