Fresno State Hires UAA’s Ryan McCarthy as Women’s Basketball Head Coach

After 13 seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball program, Ryan McCarthy is headed to the Division I ranks. On Monday, McCarthy was officially named the new head coach at Fresno State.

McCarthy, who grew up in Alaska and turned the Seawolves into a perennial Division II powerhouse, leaves Anchorage with a 309-67 (.821) career record, seven Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) titles, and nine NCAA Tournament appearances. His 2015–16 squad finished as national runner-up — the highest achievement in program history.

“It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to be the women’s basketball coach at UAA,” McCarthy said. “The ladies who built this have left a championship legacy, but the most rewarding legacies are the graduates, professionals, spouses, and mothers who came through this program.”

A Legacy of Excellence in Anchorage

Since taking over the program in 2012, McCarthy elevated UAA to national prominence. Under his leadership, the Seawolves posted a remarkable 82.1% winning percentage, and he earned six GNAC Coach of the Year and five West Region Coach of the Year honors. His teams regularly competed against — and defeated — Division I programs, tallying nine such wins and capturing two Great Alaska Shootout titles.

McCarthy also developed standout talent during his tenure, mentoring eight All-Americans, ten All-Region honorees, and 38 All-GNAC selections.

“Growing up in Alaska and watching the Seawolves created a dream that I was ultimately able to fulfill,” McCarthy said. “While it is sad to say goodbye, it’s rewarding to know we are leaving this program in a strong position.”

Looking Ahead

McCarthy takes over a Fresno State program looking to return to prominence in the Mountain West Conference. Known for his energetic style, sharp defensive schemes, and player development, McCarthy brings a winning pedigree and a reputation for building culture on and off the court.

UAA athletic director Ryan Swartwood praised McCarthy’s impact on the university and state.

“We wish to extend our deepest appreciation to Ryan McCarthy,” Swartwood said. “For the past 13 years, Coach McCarthy has led the women’s basketball program and made special contributions to its success. We wish him the best in this next chapter.”

UAA has announced that a national search for McCarthy’s successor will begin immediately.
