Latrobe Volleyball Rides Chemistry and Comeback Spirit to Unbeaten Start

There was more than one reason to celebrate last week at Latrobe High School. After the Wildcats’ thrilling 3-2 win over Penn-Trafford, it wasn’t just another notch in the win column—it was a meeting of two volleyball stars from different generations.

Following the Section 2-3A victory, Latrobe head coach Drew Vosefski brought together his son, Eric Vosefski, a former Wildcats standout, and current senior setter Eric Bisignani, who is approaching a career milestone of his own.

“I had the two Erics meet, and that was fun. It was so enjoyable,” Vosefski said.

Bisignani, a 6-foot-4 senior, entered Monday’s match against Norwin with 921 career assists. While he may fall short of Vosefski’s 1,296 career total from 1999-2003, he’s on track to become just the second boys player in program history to reach the 1,000-assist milestone.

“Eric has about a 99% chance to break that 1,000 mark this year,” Vosefski added.

Latrobe Bounces Back in a Big Way

Latrobe (8-0, 4-0) is off to a perfect start after a tough 2023 campaign in Class 2A. Now back in Class 3A, the team was ranked second in the WPIAL and seventh statewide by the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association entering the week.

After going 5-5 in section play last year, the Wildcats have found their footing again. Much of that success is credited to the team’s chemistry and long-standing friendships.

“A lot of us have been playing together for seven years,” Bisignani said. “We’ve played club ball across different states against top competition, and that’s made us a better high school team.”

Club Success Fuels Team Chemistry

Coach Vosefski leaned into that club experience during the offseason, pulling together players who had previously been scattered across different programs. The group trained at the home gym of Bisignani’s uncle, Dr. Greg Bisignani, and went on to win seven club tournaments.

“I told them, ‘I’ll keep you together if you’re ready to put in the work,’ and they all said yes,” Vosefski said.

That bond off the court is translating to results on it.

“Whether it’s team dinners, hanging out, or poker nights, we’re always together,” said senior Tyler Bauer. “That makes us better on the court.”

Jay Sumner, a senior middle hitter who joined the team just two years ago after playing hockey, said it’s the best decision he’s made.

“I feel so close to everyone that it’s like second nature to play with them,” Sumner said. “They push me to be better, and I do the same for them.”

Shared History, Shared Goals

Senior Owen Ward, a 6-3 outside hitter committed to Division III Saint Vincent, reflected on the team’s journey from being sophomores on a 9-1 squad to now leading a top-ranked program.

“We’ve gone through ups and downs together,” he said. “But now, we’re playing for each other.”

Teammate Luke Fiore echoed that sentiment: “It’s awesome playing with your friends—some of us have known each other since we were little kids. It makes the wins that much sweeter.”

Legacy in the Making

Coach Vosefski, now in his 30th season coaching boys and girls volleyball at Latrobe, said this group holds a special place in his heart.

“What I’m most impressed with is how these guys stuck together. They have a bond that’s hard to describe,” he said.

After the win over Penn-Trafford, as the gym began to empty, a passerby mentioned it was their birthday.

“Oh, it is now? That’s nice,” Vosefski replied. “Mine is tomorrow.”

The now 67-year-old coach smiled, packed his bag, and walked out—satisfied, but always focused on what’s next.
