In the final match of the regular season, No. 8 Stanford men’s tennis (19–5, 10–3 ACC) earned a 4–2 victory over No. 9 California (17–7, 10–3 ACC) on Saturday in the Big Slam at the Taube Family Tennis Center. The win extended Stanford’s winning streak over Cal to five straight matches.
Stanford got off to a slow start, losing the doubles point after defeats on Courts 2 and 3. It was the sixth time this season the Cardinal have dropped the first point, but once again, they responded strongly in singles play.
Junior Samir Banerjee led the comeback with a dominant performance on Court 1. He beat Cal’s Carl Emil Overbeck, the No. 13-ranked player in the country, in straight sets 6–0, 6–4. Banerjee, who is ranked No. 12 nationally, has now won four of his last five matches and remains Stanford’s top singles player.
Freshman Nico Godsick continued his strong first season with a convincing 6–2, 6–2 win on Court 5. Godsick has been a consistent performer for Stanford, and this match marked his 12th singles win in dual-match play this year.
Stanford built on the momentum. Graduate student Henry von der Schulenburg secured another point with a straight-set win on Court 4. Then, sophomore Alex Razeghi sealed the match with a 6–3, 6–2 victory on Court 6.
With the win, Stanford finished 10–3 in ACC play, tying Cal for third place. The Cardinal earned the No. 3 seed for the upcoming ACC Championships in Cary, North Carolina. They will receive a double bye and begin play in the quarterfinals on Thursday, April 18.
