Florida Gulf Coast University’s beach volleyball team is headed to Boca Raton this weekend to compete in the Capri Classic, hosted by No. 15 Florida Atlantic University. The event runs Friday and Saturday and features four teams: FGCU, Florida Atlantic, South Florida, and UTEP.
The tournament will follow a round-robin format. Each team will play three matches, and the two teams with the best records will meet in the championship on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Eagles will begin play Friday at 2 p.m. against South Florida, followed by a match against the host, Florida Atlantic, at 4 p.m. They wrap up the round-robin portion Saturday morning at 11 a.m. with a matchup against UTEP.
FGCU enters the tournament with a 14-10 overall record and 5-2 in ASUN play. The team has been on a strong run, winning nine of its last 10 matches. The only loss during that stretch came in a close 3-2 battle against No. 20 FIU—a team FGCU upset earlier this season when FIU was ranked No. 14.
Head coach Chris Sweat recently celebrated his 100th career win during last weekend’s competition in Pompano Beach. Leading the way were FGCU’s No. 2 pair, Alexis Keeter and Ava Lilliquist, who went a perfect 4-0 with three straight-set victories—including one against FIU.
Despite their recent success, the Eagles narrowly missed breaking into the national Top 20. They received nine votes in the latest AVCA Collegiate Beach Poll, just behind Tulane, which FGCU has beaten twice.
