In other men’s singles action, third seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand came from behind to defeat India’s Kiran George 19-21, 21-13, 21-16 in a 76-minute battle.
China’s Li Shifeng and Japan’s Naraoka Kodai also advanced with straight-games victories over Chi Yu-jen and Priyanshu Rajawat, respectively, and will face off in the quarter-finals.
A high-profile showdown awaits as top seed Shi Yuqi of China prepares to meet Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew. Shi eased past Tanaka Yushi 21-16, 21-12, while Loh beat Lee Chia-hao 21-15, 21-17. The pair last met at the All England Open in March, with Shi winning that encounter. Shi holds a 4-2 advantage in their head-to-head.
In women’s singles, Japan’s Yamaguchi Akane edged India’s PV Sindhu in a three-game thriller to book a quarter-final against Olympic champion Chen Yufei, who defeated Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-16, 21-17.
China’s Han Yue also moved into the last eight with a 21-14, 21-11 win over Komang Ayu Cahya Dewi of Indonesia. She’ll next face Supanida Katethong of Thailand.
