Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou has expressed his frustration with his team’s inability to convert chances in their 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League quarterfinal first leg. The Australian coach suggested that his team has fallen out of favor with the “football gods” this season after failing to take full advantage of their opportunities in front of goal.
Pedro Porro’s clever finish equalized for Spurs after Hugo Ekitike gave Frankfurt an early lead, but Postecoglou’s side wasted several key chances that could have given them a strong advantage going into the second leg next week. Lucas Bergvall struck the frame of the goal in the 55th minute, and Rodrigo Bentancur’s header also rattled the crossbar shortly after. Frankfurt goalkeeper Kauã Santos was crucial in keeping Spurs at bay, particularly with a stoppage-time save to deny Micky van de Ven’s header from snatching a late win for Tottenham.
Postecoglou, disappointed with his team’s luck, reflected on the outcome with a touch of humor, saying: “I’m resigned to the fact that the football gods have got their eyes elsewhere this year. They’re obviously busy with other clubs and other managers so whatever we get, we’re going to have to do it without them this year.”
The coach’s second season at Spurs has been marked by struggles, with an ongoing injury crisis and poor performances leaving the team languishing in 14th place in the Premier League. Spurs have already lost more than half of their league matches this season, and their Europa League campaign now represents their best chance to end a 17-year trophy drought.
Despite the draw, Postecoglou highlighted the efforts of several players, particularly Lucas Bergvall, Rodrigo Bentancur, and the defensive duo of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. He praised their contributions throughout the match, noting that the team created plenty of chances in the second half. “We don’t get the win but I can’t ask [for] any more from the players,” Postecoglou added.
Tottenham will next face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Sunday before traveling to Frankfurt for the crucial second leg of their Europa League quarterfinal clash next week.
