The Indian women’s tennis team continued its strong performance at the Billie Jean King Cup 2025 Asia-Oceania Group 1, earning a 2-1 win over Hong Kong China on Thursday. The match was held at the Mahalunge Balewadi Tennis Complex in Pune.
India started the tie on a high note with Vaidehi Chaudhari making her tournament debut. She overcame a tough challenge from Ho Ching Wu in the opening singles match. After a close first set that went to a tiebreak, Vaidehi held her nerve to win it 10-8. She then dominated the second set to seal a 7(10)-6(8), 6-1 win in just over two hours.
In the second singles match, Shrivalli Bhamidipaty continued her impressive form by winning her third straight match of the tournament. She faced a strong fight from Hong Yi Cody Wong in a three-set battle. Shrivalli won the first set in a tiebreak, lost the second, but came back strong in the final set. With eight aces in the match, she claimed a 7(8)-6(6), 2-6, 6-3 victory, securing the tie for India with an unbeatable 2-0 lead.
The day ended with a doubles match where India’s Ankita Raina and Prarthana Thombare played against Eudice Chong and Hong Yi Cody Wong. The Indian pair won the first set through a tiebreak, but their opponents bounced back in the second. In a tight final set, Hong Kong China edged past India, winning 7-6, 3-6, 13-11.
India will face Chinese Taipei in their next group-stage match on Friday.
