Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne has announced that he will leave the club at the end of the season.
The 33-year-old midfielder revealed the news in an emotional social media post on Friday, saying it was time to close this chapter of his career. “Nothing about this is easy to write, but as football players, we all know this day eventually comes. That day is here – and you deserve to hear it from me first,” he wrote.
De Bruyne joined City from German club Wolfsburg in 2015 and has since become one of the most important players in the club’s history. Over nine seasons, he has helped Manchester City win 14 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League in 2023.
“Football led me to all of you – and to this city,” De Bruyne continued. “Chasing my dream, not knowing this period would change my life. This City. This club. These people … gave me EVERYTHING. I had no choice but to give EVERYTHING back! And guess what – we won everything.”
Widely regarded as one of the best midfielders of his generation, De Bruyne was named PFA Players’ Player of the Year in both the 2019–20 and 2020–21 seasons. He is also second on the Premier League’s all-time assists list, with 118.
De Bruyne’s contract is set to expire at the end of June. It is still unclear whether he will feature for Manchester City in the FIFA Club World Cup, which runs from June 14 to July 13.
“Every story comes to an end, but this has definitely been the best chapter,” he wrote. “Let’s enjoy these last moments together!”
