Lions’ Ivy League Streak Ends with Tough Loss to Yale

The 72nd-ranked Columbia women’s tennis team put up a strong fight but came up short in a 4–2 loss to No. 69 Yale on Sunday afternoon at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.

The defeat ends Columbia’s (11–7, 2–1 Ivy) unbeaten start in Ivy League play and snaps a three-match winning streak. Meanwhile, Yale (11–7, 2–1 Ivy) remains perfect at home, improving to 6–0 this season on its own courts.

Columbia started strong by securing the doubles point. Malak El Allami and Fatima Keita teamed up to defeat Yale’s Orly Ogilvy and Erin Ha, 6–3. Gayathri Krishnan and Sophia Strugnell then clinched the point with another 6–3 win, this time over Mirabelle Brettkelly and Shyla Aggarwal.

In singles play, Keita earned a hard-fought victory over Ha, rallying to win 2–6, 6–2, 6–4. However, the Bulldogs responded by winning four of the remaining five matches. Columbia’s El Allami was forced to retire during her match against Ogilvy after leading early. Wins from Julia Werdiger, Mirabelle Brettkelly, and Angela Huang sealed the match for Yale.

Krishnan’s match against Aggarwal was left unfinished, with the Columbia junior leading in the third set.
