The University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons secured a double victory against the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors in the UAAP Season 87 volleyball tournament on March 30 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
This marks the second time both UP’s men’s and women’s volleyball teams have defeated UE this season.
Men’s Team Triumphs in Four Sets
The UP Men’s Volleyball Team (UPMVT) outlasted the Red Warriors in four sets, winning 25-21, 25-21, 22-25, 25-21.
UPMVT took control early, claiming the first two sets with solid attacking and strong defense. They were on the verge of a straight-set victory, leading 22-21 in the third, but UE responded with four consecutive points to extend the match.
In the fourth set, UP started aggressively. Led by Olayemi Raheem and Tommy Castrodes, the Fighting Maroons built a 15-10 lead and never looked back. Raheem delivered 22 points, while Castrodes added 16 points to seal the win.
Women’s Team Sweeps UE
The UP Women’s Volleyball Team (UPWVT) continued their momentum from a big win against the National University Lady Bulldogs on March 26, sweeping UE in three sets: 25-21, 25-18, 25-17.
The first set was tightly contested, with UE leading 18-17. However, UP showed composure and defensive strength to take the set. The Fighting Maroons then dominated the second frame and carried their momentum into the third.
With the score tied at 5-5 in the final set, UPWVT’s Kassy Doering, Joan Monares, Irah Jaboneta, and Kianne Olango combined for a seven-point scoring run, giving UP a 12-5 lead. That surge proved too much for UE to overcome.
Monares led the team with 15 points, while Jaboneta contributed 13. Doering and Olango each added eight points.

The Fighting Maroons will return to action on April 6 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum. The UPMVT will battle the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws at 9 a.m., followed by the UPWVT taking on the FEU Lady Tamaraws at 1 p.m.
