The Shippensburg University women’s tennis team fell short in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener, losing 5-2 to Kutztown on Wednesday afternoon at Keystone Courts.
Shippensburg (5-9, 0-1 PSAC East) put up a strong fight in doubles play. Sophomore Ava Kalist and senior Kendall Winters secured a 6-1 victory in the No. 3 doubles match. However, Kutztown (3-5, 1-0 PSAC East) claimed the doubles point by winning the top two flights, both by a 6-1 score.
Rupert and Orris Earn Singles Wins
In singles competition, senior Brooklynn Rupert and sophomore Brinley Orris picked up wins for the Raiders.
Rupert dominated her No. 5 singles match, defeating Gabby Gentile 6-2, 6-1 to even the match at 1-1. At No. 6 singles, Orris battled through a tough contest against Ryleigh Bohning, ultimately winning 6-4, 4-6, 10-2.
Three of the remaining four singles matches were competitive, with Shippensburg players winning at least six games.
- Freshman Jade Miller took seven games in her No. 3 singles match (4-6, 3-6).
- Junior Corinne Markovich fought hard at No. 1 singles, winning six games (4-6, 2-6).
- Sophomore Rachel Gallagher also won six games at No. 4 singles (3-6, 3-6).
