Missouri State continued its strong run, winning for the seventh time in eight games with a 10-8 victory over Oklahoma State at Hammons Field on Tuesday. This marks the second consecutive Tuesday the Bears (14-13) have topped a Power Four conference team.
The Bears scored in double digits for the sixth time in eight games, with contributions from every starter. Eight players recorded a hit and scored a run.
After Oklahoma State (12-14) jumped out to a 2-0 lead, Max Knight’s two-run double in the bottom of the first tied the game. The Cowboys regained a 4-2 lead with two runs in the third, but the Bears responded. Jake McCutcheon led off the third with a double and scored on Taeg Gollert’s single. Knight later singled and stole home, tying the game at 4-4.
In the fourth, William Zareh led off with a solo homer, and Nick Rodriguez doubled and scored on an error for a 6-4 lead. The Bears took control in the fifth with four more runs. Caden Bogenpohl’s bases-loaded walk, a wild pitch, a Rodriguez fielder’s choice, and a McCutcheon RBI single pushed the lead to 10-4.
Owen Slater (1-1) pitched 3.2 innings of relief, earning his first win with a career-high five strikeouts. The only blemish on his performance was a two-run homer in the sixth that brought OSU within 10-6.
Curry Sutherland pitched a scoreless seventh, and Jackson Holmes closed out the game with two scoreless innings, escaping a jam in the ninth after OSU scored two runs before the first out.
Gollert (15) and Rodriguez (14) extended their hitting streaks, while Bogenpohl reached base for the 40th consecutive game. Dylan Robertson tied his career high with three hits.
The Bears’ pitching staff recorded 15 strikeouts, matching a season best.
Next up, Missouri State heads to Southern Illinois for a crucial series with the two teams tied atop the Missouri Valley Conference standings. Game one is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, April 4.
