Jonathan Powell Commits to UNC, Strengthening the Tar Heels’ Roster

West Virginia’s first-year guard Jonathan Powell has committed to the University of North Carolina men’s basketball team, according to Inside Carolina. This marks the Tar Heels’ first pickup from the transfer portal this offseason, following the early departures of sophomore guard Elliot Cadeau and junior forward Jalen Washington.

Powell, a 6-foot-6 guard from Dayton, Ohio, made a strong impact in his first season with the Mountaineers. He averaged 8.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 30 minutes per game in 32 appearances. Powell shot 37.8 percent from the field and 35.2 percent from beyond the arc, though he struggled at the free-throw line, hitting just 48 percent of his attempts.

As a high school player, Powell was a three-star recruit, ranked as Ohio’s seventh-best prospect. After entering the transfer portal on March 17, his status improved to a four-star recruit. In his senior year of high school, Powell posted averages of 19.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game, while shooting 46.6 percent from the field and 40 percent from three-point range.
