When Sergio Camello found himself through on goal at the Parc des Princes, he knew this was his moment of destiny. The Paris 2024 men’s football final had gone into extra time after France fought back to level the match at 3-3 against Spain.
Despite a squad filled with talent from FC Barcelona and Spain’s European Championship-winning team, it was the self-proclaimed “kid from the block” from Madrid who stole the spotlight.
A Golden Moment for Spain
Camello delivered when it mattered most, scoring twice in extra time to secure a 5-3 victory for Spain, earning their first Olympic football gold medal since Barcelona 1992.
“I’m still processing it after all this time,” Camello told Olympics.com in Spanish. “I didn’t quite believe it, but in football, as in life, it’s all about being in the right place at the right time, being ready when it’s your turn.”
Belief Turned into Reality
The Spanish striker credited his teammates and coaching staff for instilling confidence in him.
“Both the coaching staff and the players made me believe that I was going to be the one to win it for Spain,” he said. “When you hear that so much, it sparks something in you. You say to yourself, ‘You’re good, you can do it.’
“I think I believed it so much that I made it happen. Those two goals changed a lot in me; it seems that day I was touched with a wand to be the protagonist.”
