Arsenal’s Raheem Sterling and Chelsea’s Lauren James have been named among the most influential black figures in British football as part of the 2024 Football Black List.
The annual celebration, established in 2008, highlights the contributions of black individuals across different areas of the sport. Joining Sterling and James on this year’s list are Aston Villa and England defender Tyrone Mings, Tottenham’s Brazilian forward Richarlison, and QPR’s Kasha Petit.
Recognizing Impact Across Football
Nottingham Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo is included in the coaching category, alongside Port Vale manager Darren Moore, England Under-21 assistant coach Ashley Cole, Watford Women’s Renee Hector, and Arsenal Women’s Under-21s coach Carly Williams.
The Football Black List is compiled across eight categories, including a “ones to watch” section highlighting promising talents under 30. The final selections are made by a panel of experts from the Premier League, Professional Footballers’ Association, League Managers’ Association, EFL, and Kick It Out, an anti-racism organization.
A Call for More Representation
Leon Mann, co-founder of the Football Black List, emphasized the need for greater diversity beyond the pitch.
“The Football Black List once again serves as a reminder of the incredible impact black communities are making in football,” Mann said.
“But while we celebrate the exceptional people on the list, we must also acknowledge the ongoing underrepresentation of black people in boardrooms, dugouts, and leadership positions. We must take this challenge on with urgency.”
