Two-time Olympic badminton champion Viktor Axelsen has announced he will undergo back surgery in hopes of extending his career and returning to competition without pain.
Axelsen, who won men’s singles gold at both Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, has claimed World Tour victories in India and Germany this year. However, the 31-year-old recently suffered an early exit at the Yonex All England Open Badminton Championships.
With the 2025 European Championships set to take place in his home country of Denmark, Axelsen has confirmed he will not be competing as he prioritizes his recovery.
A Tough Decision for Long-Term Goals
The world No. 3 shared the news on social media, expressing optimism about his return.
“After consulting my medical team, I have decided to undergo endoscopic treatment for my back issue next week,” Axelsen wrote on X. “While this means I will need some weeks of rehab post-surgery, I am confident I will come back stronger.”
He emphasized his commitment to the sport, stating:
“I still feel like I have a lot of badminton left in me, and I’m fully committed to doing everything necessary to return to the court at my best. I’m surrounded by extremely competent people, and I’m looking forward to hopefully training and competing pain-free again. Thank you for all your support — it truly means a lot to me.”
Looking Ahead to the World Championships
Axelsen, a two-time world champion (2017 Glasgow, 2022 Tokyo), is now focused on his recovery with the 2025 BWF World Championships in August as a potential target for his return.
Fans and fellow athletes will be hoping for a swift and successful rehabilitation, allowing the Danish star to continue competing at the highest level.
