The University of Oklahoma has announced that former Sooners star and four-time NBA All-Star Trae Young will serve as assistant general manager for the men’s basketball program. OU Vice President and Athletics Director Joe Castiglione confirmed the hiring on Monday, along with Young’s pledge to donate $1 million to support the team’s championship aspirations.
Young, 26, will take on responsibilities in player personnel, roster management, and brand development for student-athletes. His role also includes evaluating high school and transfer portal prospects and assisting with player contract negotiations in compliance with NCAA and conference regulations. Additionally, he will contribute to fundraising efforts aimed at strengthening the program.
“Trae is a son of Norman, Oklahoma, and he’s given so much to our city and its people,” said Castiglione. “Even as he thrives in the NBA, he never forgets his roots. His mind is made for this game, and we’re incredibly fortunate to have him helping to shape our program’s future.”
A Homegrown Basketball Legend
Young, a Norman native, played for Oklahoma in the 2017-18 season, becoming the first player in NCAA Division I history to lead the nation in both scoring (27.4 points per game) and assists (8.7 per game). His single-season scoring average remains the highest in OU and Big 12 Conference history.
“As someone who grew up in Norman and played at the University of Oklahoma, stepping into this role is a huge honor,” said Young. “My focus is on contributing to OU’s winning culture and helping bring in the right players to help us compete at the highest level.”
A Major Boost for the Sooners
Head coach Porter Moser expressed his enthusiasm about Young’s involvement, highlighting both his financial support and his basketball expertise.
“This is a really big day for our program,” Moser said. “Trae’s $1 million gift is an unbelievably generous contribution that will directly impact our success. As assistant GM, his knowledge of the game and his credibility with younger players will help take our program to new heights.”
Young’s impressive college career set the stage for a successful NBA run. Drafted No. 5 overall in 2018, he has since earned four All-Star selections and led the NBA in assists multiple times. He recently became the youngest player in league history to surpass 12,000 career points and 4,500 assists.
With Young now officially part of the Sooners’ leadership team, Oklahoma basketball gains both a decorated alum and an influential figure to help shape the program’s future.
